Altar cloths are used for rituals, rune casting, and as a centerpiece for your altar. It also can be used as a wrap to protect your ritual tools, and rune sets. This particular altar cloth is light brown rabbit fur, with the design printed with a hand cut linoleum block on the soft leather side in black ink, and measures approximately 13" by 17." Your sacred space will be even more beautiful with this hand crafted altar cloth!

Additional Note on my process: I believe a clean edged hide is more beautiful than one with rough and tattered edges, straight from my supplier. That being so, I trim and clean up the hide's outer edges, brushing out any lingering particles. leaving the hide more beautiful and clean. This usually takes about a half hour, and is well worth the extra work!

About the Design.

The beautiful artwork painted on the altar cloth is based upon the rock carvings of Bronze Age Lur-blowers from Kalleby in Bohuslän, west Sweden.

Since the first find, the lurs have been shrouded in mystery and their purpose has frequently been discussed. In a museum catalogue from 1836 the musical instruments are described as ‘lurs or war trumpets of bronze’. Especially in the nineteenth century, the lurs were mentioned regularly as a signal instrument used in war. However, it is more likely that they were used in connection with rituals. On Swedish rock carvings from the Bronze Age one can see lur-blowers who are undoubtedly participating in processions or religious rites. Lurs are also exclusively found in bogs, perhaps because of their special role in religion.
