Drinking Horn 20 oz. Freyja Goddess Drinking Horn with Wood Stand

This is a hand carved drinking horn featuring a design depicting the Norse Goddess, Freyja, and her chariot drawn by two fierce cats! inspired by Bronze Age petroglyphs, which were found in Bohuslan, Sweden, I modified the original image to reflect the goddess and her felines.

The goddess Freya and her cats

Freya (or Freyja) was a fertility goddess and was associated with domesticity, womanhood, and female sexuality. She was also associated with sorcery and magic, as well as war and death. It was said that after a battle, Freya would lead a band of Valkyries to gather the fallen warriors—or half of them, at least. She would take her share of the dead to Folkvang, her hall in the home of the gods, while the other half went to Odin, god of wisdom and war. Freya might also have been the goddess on hand to greet women after death.

Freya’s chariot was pulled not by horses but by two male cats. Both cats were described as being blue or gray and had been a gift from Thor. Their names (bestowed upon them not by the ancient Norse but by a modern author, according to the Viking Answer Lady) were Bygul and Trjegul.

The horn itself is approximately 19" long and holds 20 oz. I begin with genuine steer longhorns that have been roughly cleaned, but not polished. I scrub and clean the horn inside and out, filing, sanding and polishing it, then carve the unique design. I then finish the exterior of the horn with a woodblock conditioning oil, and seal up the inside with wood bowl sealer. Once this is done, the drinking horn is ready to use with your favorite cold beverage, such as mead, or ale!

Subtle “imperfections” in the surface that complement the ancient artwork were retained, adding additional visual and tactile element.

Drinking Horn Comes With a Handmade Wood Stand.

    Care and Cleaning Tips

Now coming to the point, caring for your horn initiates with first keeping it clean. When cleaning your drinking horn, it is necessary to keep in mind the things that render them useless. Also, you need to be knowledgeable about how to preserve your drinking horn. Below are a few tips you should pay attention to in order to ensure the preservation of your drinking horn for many years to come.

    Things You Should Completely AVOID

The use of dishwashers for cleaning
    Microwaving them
    Using them for hot liquids
Using strong solvents, detergents, and chemicals
    Storing in extreme temperatures
Exposure to temperature swings as they can cause cracking
Using sharp objects for cleaning as they can scratch and damage the surface

    Things You NEED To Do

Hand-wash your drinking horn after every use
Dry it with a soft towel immediately after washing
Cleaning your horn is an easy task once you fall into a routine. Your drinking horn is coated and sealed, so you need to simply use warm water (not hot) and a soft cloth to clean it. Then, rinse and dry it with a towel to get rid of the moisture immediately.

Your drinking horn may need to be coated with wood bowl sealer after a year or two, depending upon wear and tear. There are many videos on YouTube detailing how this is done. Lastly, frequently polish the exterior of your drinking horn once in a while with vegetable oil, or a beeswax wood furniture oil to prevent it from drying out, since it is a natural material.
