War Horn Jelling Style Viking Signal Horn
This hand crafted war/signal horn is adorned with a hand carved design inspired by the Viking Age rune stone known as the Jelling Stone. The rune stone was erected around the year 965 by King Harold Bluetooth, in Jelling, Denmark, in memory of King Harald’s parents, Gorm and Thyra. The inscription on the stone also gives an account of Harald’s achievements. He unified Denmark and made the Danes Christian. On one side of the stone Christ can be seen and on the other an animal with a snake coiled around it. The image of Christ is the oldest example from Scandinavia. I chose the "Great Beast" to carve into the horn, since it is a beautiful representation of the Jelling Style.

I was inspired to craft my horns after hearing the band Heilung perform their rituals, and the powerful tone of their horns really impressed me! The horn itself is approximately 18" long. I use genuine steer longhorns that are raw, natural, and needing lots of cleaning. I scrub and clean the horn inside and out, cutting, filing, sanding and polishing it, then carve the unique design. I then finish by rubbing down the exterior of the horn with a food grade cutting board oil, or a beeswax wood oil which conditions the surface of the horn.
Signal Horn Care
I suggest a periodic application of beeswax conditioning oil, or a food grade cutting board oil to keep the horn in fine condition. Use a soft clean rag and a bit of the oil to keep your horn looking beautiful!
This horn is fully functional, with the mouthpiece being formed from the tip of the horn. I cut off the first few inches of the horn's tip, drill through the solid material into the main body of the horn, and then shape and carve until I can get a beautiful tone from the horn!
Your horn will be carefully packaged in a sturdy upcycled cardboard box.
