Ritual Altar cloth with Elder Futhark and Vegvisir Magical Stave

Alter cloths are used for rituals, rune casting, and as a centerpiece for your alter. It also can be used as a wrap to protect your ritual tools, and rune sets. This particular alter cloth is light brown, or grey rabbit fur, with the design block printed on the soft leather side in red and black ink, measuring approximately 14" by 17." Your sacred space will be even more beautiful with this hand crafted alter cloth!

About the Design.

The 24 Elder Futhark runes are block printed upon a beautiful rabbit hide in a circular pattern, allowing for placement of ritual tools such as candles, incense burners, or your patron god or goddess. The power of the entire set of runes imbues the alter cloth with beauty and a sense of the sacred.

I have also printed a red Icelandic magical stave Vegvisir, in the center of the circle of runes to complete this ritual design.
This Vegvisir is modeled after the stave seen in the Huld Manuscript. These galdrastafir (Icelandic Magical Staves) are said to help the user find his or her way by sea or land in harsh conditions, even when the road is not known.
In modern esoteric use, the Vegvisir is often used in a more metaphoric sense to help the user find his or her way on their spiritual path. For this reason it has become a popular choice as a spiritual tattoo.

The combination of black Futhark Runes, and Vegvisir makes for a powerful, and beautiful design. Each ritual cloth is individually hand printed in red and black upon the rabbit hide using a linocut block carved in my shop, presenting a beautiful and unique ritual element for your alter or sacred space.


Natural Edges vs Trimmed and Clean!

You can also opt for a more raw, wild look for the ritual cloth! By leaving much of the jagged edge unaltered, I can offer the ritual cloth for a more affordable cost to the buyer, since I don't put the extra work into the process of crafting your ritual cloth.

Runic Meaning

The Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabets, and is named after the first six runes in the 24 Rune system.

FEHU - (F) "fay-hoo" Cattle.
URUZ - (U) "ooo-rooze" Strength of will.
THURISAZ - (TH) "thur-ee-saws" Thorn, giant.
ANSUZ - (A) "awn-sooze" the AESIR, ancestral god, Odin.
RAIDHO - (R) “Rye — Though” Wagon or chariot.
KENAZ - (C/K) “Cane — Awes” Beacon or torch, ulcer.
GEBO - (G) “Yee — Boo” Gift.
WUNJO - (W/V) “Woon — Yo” Joy.
HAGALAZ - (H) “haw — gaw — laws” Hail.
NAUTHIZ — (N) “now — these” Need.
ISA - (I) “eee — saw” Ice.
JERA - (J/Y) “yare — awe” A year, a good harvest.
EIHWAZ - (EI) “eye — was” Yew tree.
