Viking Tullstorp Runestone Ritual Alter Cloth Rabbit Hide Black Ink
Alter cloths are used for rituals, rune casting, and as a centerpiece for your alter. It also can be used as a wrap to protect your ritual tools, and rune sets. These particular alter cloths are made with wondrously soft, light to dark brown rabbit fur, with the linoleum block design hand printed on the soft leather side in red ink. It measures approximately 13" by 17." Actual size and color varies a bit from hide to hide, but I'll pick one closest to those pictured.
About the Design.
The inscription on the Tullstorp Runestone, of Skåne, Sweden, consists of runic text on a serpent band that frames a central image consisting of a ship and a beast, which is usually described as being a wolf. The stone is granite and is in the Ringerike style. The original site of the Tullstorp Runestone is unknown, but it was first noted in 1624 when it was installed in the wall of a church, and rediscovered when the old church in Tullstorp was torn down in 1846. Before the historical significance of runestones was understood, they were all too often used as building materials. The stone first ended up in the wall surrounding the church yard; later it was moved to the current position inside the church yard. It is dated from about 1000 AD.
The ship and the wolf in the central image probably reflects the Ragnarök myth, which would make the wolf Fenrir and the ship Naglfar. The ship is shaped like an ancient galley with beakheads both fore and aft and is unlike any known Viking ship, suggesting from its archaic form that it is a symbolic ship associated with ritual. The runic text indicates that the stone was raised as a memorial to a man named Ulfr.
"Kleppir/Glippir and Ása raised this monument in memory of Ulfr."
Additional Note on my process: I believe a clean edged hide is more beautiful than one with rough and tattered edges, straight from my supplier. That being so, I trim and clean up the hide's outer edges, brushing out any lingering particles. leaving the hide more beautiful and clean. This usually takes about a half hour, and is well worth the extra work!
Natural Edges vs Trimmed and Clean!
You can also opt for a more raw, wild look for the ritual cloth! By leaving much of the jagged edge unaltered, I can offer the ritual cloth for a more affordable cost to the buyer, since I don't put the extra work into the process of crafting your ritual cloth.
